Camp Driftwood was the first commercial cottage colony constructed on Back Lake. The first land purchase was in the fall of 1932. The first cottage was constructed a bit later. The owner, being in a rush to have some occupied and earning a return on his investment, stoked a roaring fire in the wood stove to dry the fresh varnish and/or paint. To his dismay, the woodstove overheated and burned the cottage to the ground.
By 1936, three cottages were in operation, with a combination small general store/restaurant with owner's quarters on the second floor. This building was sold and moved up the road a few years later. Additional land was purchased, four more cottages built, and a development of "camp lots" along what are now Spooner Road and Hawes Road. These original owners sold their cottage business in 1954. The second owners were here from 1954 to 1971. Your present hosts have been here since that time. |
